JoyceDeWitt began performing on stage at 13 years old. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said that she had not ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her performance in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was an opportunity she was offered after being selected for the pilot episode that followed. She also portrayed Janet in an episode in 1979 from the spinoff series , The Ropers. DeWitt was the last actor to appear in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. Then, she appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she ceased acting for a number of years. Acting was her first foray back to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she played a part on a Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was modelled on her voice by a different actress in 1997. She was in the episode Cybill. Her 2000s work include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
